Role Description:
Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM) copyediting is a field that is rapidly growing in India, as part of the KPO surge.
Copyediting is an integral part of the publishing world; everything that is ever written goes through a polishing process before it hits the printing press and this is more so in the STM world.
During the review phase of STM publishing, the content of a manuscript is looked at by an expert purely from a scientific angle — in terms of whether it contributes to knowledge. Once accepted for publication, a book or a journal article is processed for typesetting and printing.
During the copyediting phase the content is examined by a copyeditor in terms of its expression, in addition to formatting the manuscript according to design specifications. The copyeditor is not necessarily a subject expert. She — women seem to dominate this field, worldwide — looks at a manuscript very closely in terms of what is intended and what is actually conveyed by the words and sentences in the manuscript. Ideally, she is an expert in the craft of writing. .
· A copyeditor is one who has mastered grammar in the sense that he/she knows that logic is the rock-solid basis behind every rule of grammar— and that a sentence falls into place the moment the thought process is straight and clear.
· He/She looks for clarity of thought — and polishes the content by working on its clarity of expression.
· He/She notices and corrects commonly violated rules of grammar, punctuation, usage, and expression.
· He/She spots long, confounding, and sometimes meaningless sentences, ponders over what was meant, and rewords them to faithfully reflect the author’s thoughts; she alerts the author about these possible misreadings, mishaps, and catastrophes.
· He/She corrects false comparisons, circumlocutions, redundant expressions, and the like, in addition to providing the missing parallelisms and symmetry to the rhythm of expression.
· He/She understands that every manuscript is the author’s intellectual property — and strives to edit by understanding the author’s individual style of writing and expression.
· He/She corrects spelling errors and ensures consistency of expression.
· He/She polishes each manuscript this way — and thus helps reveal the true brilliance of the gem within.
To put it briefly, STM copyediting is the art of reading a scholarly writer’s mind with due respect to the writer and the science.
STM copyediting is a profession for academically oriented, intellectual individuals who can work with a sense of responsibility. The profession is as stable as the food industry: The demand for food will be there as long as there are humans on this planet; the demand for STM copyeditors will also be there as long as there are humans on this planet. ["The cure for boredom is curiosity; there is no cure for curiosity" — and quite logically, there is no end to research!]
After copyediting, the manuscript goes through a page make-up phase where the layout is fixed. This is called typesetting. After that, the material gets printed.
